Alabama Gymnastics Hosts Arkansas for Annual Power of Pink Meet Friday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 10-ranked Alabama gymnastics team hosts No. 8 Arkansas in the Crimson Tide’s 14th annual Power of Pink meet Friday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum.

The Power of Pink initiative was started during the 2004-05 season by legendary Alabama coach Sarah Patterson to help raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Both teams will put aside their school colors and wear pink in support of the cause.

“Sarah started the Power of Pink to utilize this amazing platform that we have with Alabama gymnastics to help raise awareness about early detection of breast cancer,” UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. “And over the years it’s continued to grow and be this amazing blessing for our community.”

Prior to the meet, 18 breast cancer survivors will be introduced in the spotlight alongside the Tide gymnasts. In addition, 1,500 pink t-shirts and 5,000 pink t-shirts will be given away.

“We look forward to this meet all year long,” senior Nickie Guerrero said. “Friday night, we’ll be representing something greater than ourselves and the Alabama ‘A’ and that means the world to us.”

Also prior to the meet, a check totaling more than $100,000 will be presented, representing the amount raised for the DCH Breast Cancer Fund over the past year, as well as a check for nearly $2 million, representing the total amount raised for the fund since the Power of Pink’s initial season.

Both teams comes into Friday’s meet off conference wins. The Tide beat Missouri last Friday in the coliseum, while Arkansas knocked off Georgia at home.

Junior Abby Armbrecht is coming off the best meet of her Tide tenure after posting a career-best 9.95 to win the floor exercise against Missouri. Freshman Lexi Graber also used a career-best score to win an event against the Tigers, posting a 9.9 on the uneven bars.
