WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) —
It all starts with a single nail -- hammered into history.
Construction on the 2017 Inaugural Platform began on Sept. 21, 2016.
When completed, the 10,000-square-foot structure will hold more than 1,600 people on Inauguration Day.
“The inaugural ceremony may seem like a routine event but it really does remain uniquely American as a symbol to the whole world of how we transfer power; how we make it seem so ordinary, that it’s truly extraordinary," Roy Blunt, chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, said.
The platform will hold President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President-elect Mike Pence, their families and scores of dignitaries.
Planning for the platform began more than a year ago, according to the committee's website.
An additional 1,000 people will be seated on bleachers built above the platform where Trump will recite the Oath of Office.
The 58th Presidential Inauguration will be held on Jan. 20, 2017 in Washington D.C.
