500 elementary students in Citronelle made history by putting on a play with the largest children's cast ever in a Broadway Jr. musical Wednesday.

"It's real fun but real hectic at the same time," 4th grader Waylon Stokes said.

Students at McDavid-Jones Elementary school in Citronelle put on a production of Elf the Musical Jr. based on the popular holiday comedy movie. Stokes is playing the lead, "Buddy" the elf.

"I feel real great about this," he said. "It's a big show and it gives every kid opportunity to shine."

Sunny Side Theater teamed up with kindergartners through fifth graders for what Musical Theatre International calls the world's largest children's production of a musical.

"I think it's pretty amazing that Sunny Side can pull it off cause it's like so many kids," 4th grader Ally Pugh who's playing "Emily" said.

Organizers say not only is it making history, it's giving children the opportunity to explore theatre in a different way.

"This is a very big deal," Sunny Side Theater Director Chris Paragone said. "This allows a student to actually perform live and the self confidence that some of these kids have built in this process has been amazing."

Organizers say tell me they reached out to Guinness World Records but they missed the six month notification window.
