Stay of execution granted for death row inmate
ATMORE, Ala. (WPMI) —
A stay of execution was issued for an Alabama death row inmate scheduled to die tonight at Holman Prison in Atmore.
A federal court of appeals issued the stay for Dominique Ray.
He was convicted of fatally stabbing to death a 15-year-old Selma girl in 1995.
His attorneys filed a motion saying his religious rights were violated.
Ray, who is Muslim, wants an Imom at his lethal injection not a Christian chaplain,
The state denied that request, citing security reasons.
The DOC did agree to remove the chaplain from the chamber.
