Safety Alert: Hang up and drive 'Hands-Free' bill
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) —
One Alabama lawmaker is ready to force drivers to hang up and pay attention to the road.
Republican senator Jim McClendon of Springville plans to file a "Hands-Free" bill.
It'd be similar to the one just enacted in Georgia.
Georgia's law prohibits drivers from having a phone in their hand.
Right now Alabama law only prohibits texting and driving.
Drivers say distracted driving is a common sight these days.
16 states and the District of Columbia allow only hands- free use by drivers.
McClendon says Alabama's current ban on texting doesn't go far enough.
The senator says early results in Georgia show a reduction in crashes, and texting and driving.
