Mobile police arrest man in 1989 rape of 3-year-old girl
MOBILE, Ala (WPMI) —
Mobile police have made an arrest in a 29-year-old rape case.
Police say a grand jury indicted 46-year-old Timothy Robinson for the rape of a 3-year-old girl. Investigators say the rape happened in June of 1989.
Lt. Matthew James with the Mobile Police Dept. says after testing an old rape kit, DNA led them to Robinson.
James says re-interviewing the victim, who's now an adult, was a bit challenging because he says her family never told her what happened to her.
"This young lady told investigators that she would often times have dreams or nightmares about something happening to her of this nature and she would never understood why until the investigators told her about it," he said.
This isn't Robinson's first time in jail. He's been arrested multiple times for drugs and domestic violence.
James says when the results came back, Robinson was already in jail serving time for a sexual abuse arrest that happened with an 8-year-old in 2011.
He was released in October, but indicted and rearrested Friday when he went to the Mobile County Sheriff's Office to register as a sex offender.
James says hopefully this is the end of Robinson being on the streets.
"Hopefully with this arrest and his past history we can do our part to see that he doesn't get back out again," he said.
This is the third arrest since MPD received grant money to test old rape kits as part of the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI).
Lt. James says they'll likely be going forward with three or four more cases soon.
