I-10 shut down for over 80 miles
BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) —
Motorists, mostly truckers are still facing extremely hazardous conditions along Interstate 10 in and around Hurricane Michael's destructive path.
The closure is affecting the trucking industry and many who are headed East with lifesaving equipment.
From Defuniak Springs just East of Pensacola all the way past Tallahassee the Florida Highway Patrol has closed an 80-mile stretch of Interstate 10 to clear debris.
Along the Interstate you'll see signs alerting drivers of the detours and the blockage along the way. A clear sign that Hurricane Michael has had a long reaching impact.
Hundreds of truck drivers in Loxley will either have to seek alternate routes or face huge delays.
Jeffery Williams is headed from Houston to South Florida.
"If I can't get it there then they'll shut me down and I'll drop the trailer and end up picking something else up and head to Houston," said Williams.
"I got papers from the state of Florida that I can go," says truck driver Jimmy Peek came to Baldwin County to pick up a generator. His cargo, headed to Tallahassee , has priority.
"The nursing home is without power completely and they need the power so I’m bringing them a giant generator to power the whole place up, said Peek.
The 80-mile closure of Interstate 10 has made it slow going for everyone.
NBC 15 ran into a dialysis "disaster response" team from New Orleans. The team and its caravan plans to travel through the I-10 traffic. Desperate patients are waiting.
"If they don’t get dialysis from 48 to72 hours then it starts to become dire for them," said Scott Riddell with Fresenius Kidney Care.
The team just came back from North Carolina for Hurricane Florence. Today they are back on the road again to help patients in both Panama City and Tallahassee.
"We're in touch with the governor’s office and with emergency management teams throughout the entire state. Them getting to notice us with everything that's going on is always a challenge but usually when we come to a road block we are pretty successful in getting through pretty quickly," said Riddell.
Highway officials are asking that if you don’t need to be on the road, just East of Pensacola to stay off the Interstate.
