MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — Local experts warn the flu season is ramping up in Mobile County.
The Mobile County Health Department says so far this flu season there are a thousand cases.
That is half of what it was last year, but experts say don't let your guard down.
The season lasts through May so you could still get sick.
There's still time to get a flu shot, but Dr. Richard Oyler with Compass Urgent Care warns: It takes time to work.
Dr. Richard Oyler stated " the flu shot is basically a germ or a kill part of the germ and your body has to react to it. So your body has to build up its defenses when it sees that flu shot. So it takes two weeks to really ramp up. As opposed to medicine getting into your system, like an antibiotic and working right away."
Dr. O says there are a few things you can do if you have the flu already:
- Taking the mineral zinc can help your immune system
- Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Spray and wipe everything down with disinfectant inside your home
- Take hand sanitizer to those mardi gras parades.
