USA Board of Trustees approves on-campus football stadium to be built by 2020
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) —
The University of South Alabama Board of Trustees met Friday morning to authorize University of South Alabama President Dr. Tony Waldrop to execute a contract to begin construction of an on-campus football stadium for the University of South Alabama.
The University of South Alabama has been contemplating the construction of an on-campus football stadium with a seating capacity of approximately 25,000 and an estimated total cost of approximately $72 million.
The University has committed that the funding for the stadium will come from a combination of the athletic department, auxiliary enterprises, and public/private funding.
No funding for the stadium will be derived from student tuition, fees or other levies placed on students.
The University is in discussion with the City of Mobile and Mobile County to assist with funding for the payment of debt service on the stadium.
USA intends to complete construction by the Fall 2020 football season and, if desired by the bowls, to make the stadium available for the Reese’s Senior Bowl, the Dollar General Bowl and other events as agreed upon by the University.
In order to complete the stadium in time for the 2020 football season, site work must begin in July 2018.
