Defibrillator saves Flomaton basketball player's life
FLOMATON, Ala. (WPMI) —
A Flomaton High School basketball player is still recovering after he collapsed and nearly died on the court.
The 16-year-old's heart was enlarged and and stopped beating for several minutes.
Sophomore basketball player Deverick Williams suddenly collapsed Monday after playing a pick up game .
The school nurse started CPR and compressions, but Williams still couldn't be revived.
Luckily a nurse was in the gym at the time, and officials say a big part of why he's still alive is because there was a defibrillator on site.
He was transferred to a hospital in Gainsville, Florida where he'll undergo surgery.
The school already bought another defibrillator and plans to buy more in the future.
