Baldwin County farmers mourning the loss of a friend and fellow farmer
BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) —
Local farmers are mourning the loss of a friend and fellow farmer tonight.
Daphne native Joel "Gordon" Sirmon passed away Monday at age 90.
After 78 years of farming and a lifetime of making friends as one of the first farming families in south Baldwin County those who knew him remember him fondly.
Gordon Sirmon ran a dairy farm for many years and then transitioned into row crops creating a family business that's now run by his two sons and grandchildren.
Over the years the family farm has worked closely with the state's agriculture commission to create jobs and opportunities for others in the area.
Local farmers, young and old are remembering Sirmon with great respect tonight.
"I feel like he's a self-made person. I mean he started out with nothing and stuck with it his whole life and accumulated what he has today ," said Vince Allegre.
The Sirmons are known for their cotton, peanuts and sweet potatoes.
Funeral services will be held at Daphne United Methodist Church on Friday.
