There is an organization circumventing the abortion ban in multiple coastal states including Alabama. Last month a doctor from California was considering performing abortions aboard boats anchored off the coast in federal waters. Now another organization called "Abort Offshore" is doing it. This group began doing this about 3 weeks ago, but Alabama officials still have their doubts about the offshore operation.
"First of all, how are you going to transport these ladies these young ladies out there," asked representative jerry carl. "I think this is an idea that someone has spun up, I can't see it possibly working."
But it is and it happens like this- the abort offshore team puts patients up in hotels before the procedure, then depart by boat from coastal locations into federal waters.
"Once we get out there, we meet up with the doctors’ boats, they then board us and it's one gynecologist and then it's a physician's assistant," said Abort Offshore President, Michael Kimbro.
A nurse also accompanies the patient to federal waters. Kimbro tells me they offer surgical abortions on the boat and can do around 8 procedures at a time.
"We've actually not had any complications," said Kimbro.
Kimbro is a Texas native. He had this idea when thinking about how gambling is illegal in Texas, yet there are boats that go into federal waters off the Texas coast to do that very thing. Why not do the same with abortions?
"It's not that I'm saying abortions are good or bad, or what have you but to take the right away from a woman is awful," said Kimbro.
The organization's primary patients come from coastal states where abortion is banned- like Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.
