130k veterans due tax refunds: Do you qualify for $1,750 payment?
WASHINGTON (WPMI) —
Veterans are eligible to apply for refunds of taxes they paid on disability severance pay dating back almost three decades.
Federal law states that veterans who suffered combat related injuries and are separated from the military are exempt from taxes on one-time lump sum severance pay.
Veterans either have one year after the letter or three years after filing their tax return that reported the disability pay to file for a refund.
Family members of deceased veterans are also eligible, with the money going to the deceased estate.
According to MilitaryTimes, veterans are currently receiving letters on how to apply for refunds.
