Program to fight bullying
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) - The program is called Bully Blocker and it allows kids to report bullying straight from their phone. But the DA's office wants parents to be involved as well and know what is taking place in their child's life.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2016, more than one out of every five students report being bullied.
The District Attorney's office in Mobile is trying to combat that problem, not only in the schools, but helping parents deal with it at home as well.
There are several tips they suggest:
- Talk with your kids, have those conversations, and keep an open door of communication
- Check social media - just bcause it is happening in school, does not mean it is not following them home on the internet
- Keep a log of everything going on and what is happening
- And talk with your child's school
Along with this advice, Ann Sirmon with the District Attorney's office says changes in behavior can be a sign that bullying is taking place.
Also, parents need to know about the Bully Blocker program as well. It is an anonymous text service where you can report bullying.
All you need to do is text "bullyblocker" (all one word) to 444999.
