Jags catcher Jared Barnes named to Johnny Bench watchlist
WICHITA, Kan. – University of South Alabama baseball catcher Jared Barnes was named to the 2017 Johnny Bench Award Watch List presented by BaseballSavings.com, as announced by the Greater Wichita Sports Commission on Thursday.
The award is given annually to the top Division I catcher. The watch list is composed of 85 student-athletes across the nation, and will be updated on May 1. The watch list will be narrowed to a semifinalist list on May 17, while finalists will be announced on June 5.
Barnes enters the weekend batting .297 with one double, one home run, six RBI, seven runs scored and two stolen bases in 11 games played. He has recorded three multiple-hit games this season, including a two-hit performance Tuesday at Auburn in which he also drove in one run.
