Calvi named AlaBCA Division 1 Coach of the Year
MOBILE, Ala (WPMI) —
University of South Alabama baseball head coach Mark Calvi was recently named the 2017 Alabama Baseball Coaches Association (AlaBCA) Large College Division I Coach of the Year.
It marks the third straight year Calvi has won the award after he earned the honor following the 2015 and '16 seasons. He won his first AlaBCA Coach of the Year award following the Jaguars' 2013 season.
Calvi guided the Jags to a 40-21 overall record last year en route to a Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship and NCAA Hattiesburg (Miss.) Regional appearance. USA went 22-8 in SBC play and finished the season ranked No. 26 in the final Collegiate Baseball poll. It marked the second straight season the Jags have won 40 or more games, and the 21st time the program has won 40-plus contests in a year.
The Jags broke the program record for walks (373) in a season last year, which ranked second nationally. USA ranked sixth nationally in runs scored (488) and on-base percentage (.415), seventh in runs per game (0.80), 11th in fielding percentage (.980), 14th in sacrifice flies (32) and home runs (78), and 15th in slugging percentage (.480). Defensively, last season's fielding percentage of .980 broke a single-season record at USA. The Jags have ranked in the top 10 nationally in fielding percentage the last three seasons, breaking the program's previous mark in each of those seasons.
South Alabama will open the 2018 season Fri., Feb. 16, at 3 p.m. (CT) against Kansas State in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
