UCF LB Shaquem Griffin accepts invite to Reese’s Senior Bowl
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) —
University of Central Florida linebacker Shaquem Griffin, who lost his left hand when he was four years old, will get a chance to showcase his abilities in front of the eyes of the NFL at the Reese's Senior Bowl in late January.
The senior is well know in NFL scouting circles, but captured the attention of much of the nation with his performace in UCF's win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl on New Year's Day. Griffin finished the 2017 season with a team-leading 13.5 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Griffin was born with a congenital birth defect — amniotic band syndrome — that caused him to have his left hand amputated when he was four. He hasn't let that stop him. He won the 2017 Senior CLASS Award and was also a member of the AFCA Goodworks Team this year.
His twin brother, Shaquill, is a rookie in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.
Griffin was one of eight additions to the Reese's Senior Bowl rosters on Thursday. The other seven includes (alphabetical):
Bradley Bozeman, OC, Alabama - All-SEC performer, Captain of 2017 national champion Crimson Tide and anchor of the 2016 Joe Moore Award winning offensive line. He is seventh Alabama player on the roster, joining linebackers Rashaan Evans and Shaun Dion Hamilton, cornerbacks Anthony Averett and Levi Wallace, defensive tackle Da'Shawn Hand and punter JK Scott. Hamilton is injured and will only participate in off-field interviews.
Colby Gossett, OG, Appalachian State - All-Sun Belt First Team performer was a three-year starter and helped his team go 20-4 in conference play during that span, winning all three of its bowl games.
Jamarcus King, CB, South Carolina - Mobile, Ala. native (Blount HS) who led team with 12 pass breakups in 2017 and grabbed two interceptions.
Dorian O’Daniel, LB, Clemson - Butkus Award finalist led the College Football Playoff-bound Tigers with 99 tackles with 10.5 for a loss and notched 5.0 sacks.
Myles Pierce, LB, The Citadel - Daphne, Ala. native (Daphne HS) led his team with 91 tackles (13 for loss) and six sacks.
