BayBears open 2017 with 2-0 shutout of Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 6, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, began their 21st season Thursday night with a 2-0 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field.
Right-hander Tyler Carpenter (1-0) was the Opening Day starter for the BayBears (1-0) and settled in after allowing a pair of hits in the first inning. Carpenter did not allow another hit for the next five frames, and set down the last 13 batters he faced after LaMonte Wade reached on an error in the second.
Eduardo Paredes and Greg Mahle combined to complete the shutout. Paredes worked out of trouble in the seventh and retired the Lookouts in order in the eighth. Mahle's only blemish was a two-out walk, but he bounced back to strike out Dan Gamache to end the game.
After four scoreless frames, the BayBears broke through with a run off Chattanooga's ace Kohl Stewart (0-1) in the top of the fifth. Caleb Adams singled, stole second, and crossed the plate on a two-base throwing error with two outs in the inning. Mobile tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth, thanks to Luis Tejada's solo home run.
The BayBears have recorded a victory in seven of their last nine season openers, which all have come away from Hank Aaron Stadium.
The five-game series at AT&T Field continues Friday at 6:15 p.m. CT. Right-hander Osmer Morales (0-0, -.-- ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Mobile against southpaw Matt Tracy (0-0, -.-- ERA) for Chattanooga. The BayBears open their 2017 home schedule at Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, April 12 against the Jackson Generals and host 70 home dates through Labor Day, September 4.
