BayBears begin road trip with 4-1

The Mobile BayBears opened their road trip with a 4-1 win over the Mississippi Braves on Monday night at Trustmark Park. The win was Mobile's fourth victory in their last six games. Mitch Haniger and Kevin Cron both with deep while the BayBears bullpen help secure RHP John Omahen's first win on the mound in 2016.

The BayBears struck first in the top of the second inning, catcher Ronnie Freeman extended his current hitting streak to six games with a double to left. The next batter, Cron, muscled out his third home run of the season as the two-run shot put Mobile up 2-0.

The M-Braves would get their one run of the game in the bottom half of the second frame. Third baseman, Carlos Franco tripled to begin the inning and then scored from third just one batter later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher, Williams Astudillo.

Omahen (1-4) wouldn't allow Mississippi to score again. The BayBears righty allowed just one run on four hits, walking one batter and striking out a batter in six full innings on the mound. Omahen's performance earned him his first win of the season, snapping a four game losing streak to start out the year after having finished 2015 in Mobile with a 7-1 record and a 2.78 ERA.

The bats backed Omahen with two more runs in the later innings. In the seventh frame, Kevin Medrano drew a walk and then scored two batters later on a RBI double off the bat of pinch-hitter, Chad Oberacker. In the eighth inning Haniger hit a solo homerun, his third of the season, well over the left field wall as Mobile pulled ahead 4-1.

Three relievers combined to shutout Mississippi over the final three innings as LHP Steve Hathaway and RHP Joey Krehbiel bridged the gap over the seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth, RHP Jimmie Sherfy made his 2016 debut for the BayBears and struck out two batters, retiring the side in order for his first Double-A save of the season. Sherfy is now 9-for-9 in save opportunities combined between his time at Advanced-A Visalia and Mobile this season.
