The Islamic State claims responsibility for Paris attack

One police officer is dead and two more severely wounded after an ISIS attack in a major shopping area in the heart of Paris.

French officials say an attacker jumped out of a car and opened fire with an automatic weapon deliberately into a police van at Champs Elysees.

The gunman was then shot and killed.

Streets remains closed and everyone has been ordered back to their hotel rooms and subway stations in that area are closed.

The attack came three days before the first round of balloting in France's presidential election.

President Trump is also offering condolences from the U.S. to the people of France.

He calls the attack a "terrible thing" and says "it never ends." He says people must be strong and vigilant.
