Severe weather delays return of cruise ship

While the weather has calmed down on the coast, out in the Gulf, it's another story.

Winds and seas remain so rough that the Carnival cruise ship Fantasy didn't return to Mobile as scheduled this morning.

Pat Brennan, Mobile's Waterfront Coordinator, says winds in the northern Gulf are clocking in at 33 knots or 37 miles per hours, with seas approaching 16 feet, so Fantasy won't be docking in Mobile until 7 AM Tuesday.

"What will happen is the passengers that depart tomorrow will have a 4 day cruise and return Saturday, and that puts the fantasy on the scheduled itinerary."

Some passengers waiting to take the next cruise were already waiting in their cars, some from as far away as Wisconsin.

A couple from Missouri decided, instead of waiting at the terminal, they'd travel to New Orleans for the day.

As for how passengers will be compensated, that will be up to the cruise line.

Carnival released this statement Monday afternoon:

Due to adverse weather conditions, the Carnival Fantasy’s arrival into Mobile has been delayed. The ship is now expected to dock Tuesday at 11:00 AM, weather permitting. Carnival Fantasy will now operate a four-day cruise to Progreso departing on Tuesday instead of the originally scheduled five-day cruise that was scheduled to depart today. Guests who choose to sail on the modified itinerary will receive a one day pro-rated refund of their cruise fare. Guests also have the option of canceling without penalty and receiving a full refund.

Carnival sincerely apologizes for this disruption to our guests’ vacation plans.
