Mobile police say a 1-year-old boy died after he was shot with a gun that was left in his parents' bedroom.

It happened Monday around 2:30 p.m. in the 8000 block of Domain Street in Tillmans Corner.

"My heart is just broken," neighbor Colton Schmidt said. "This is a loving family."

Too shaken up to go on camera, another neighbor, Sharon Childs, says she was sitting on her porch when she heard a loud noise.

"At the time, I didn't realize it was a gunshot. I thought it was somebody kicking in a door," she said.

Childs says what she heard next made her jump up. "I heard the grandma holler 'Oh my God no, Oh my God no, somebody help me,'" she said.

She says she then ran over to help.

"I took him and held him and tried to do all I could," Childs said.

MPD Chief Lawrence Battiste says the mother says she left the one and two-year-old boys inside while she went out back to tell the grandmother she was leaving. He says that's when the shooting happened. It's unclear which one of them picked up the gun.

Battiste says, right now, they're looking at this as an accident, but it's something the parents will have to live with.

"I can't imagine the pain that this family will be going through," the chief said. "But it's going to be compounded by the fact that one of their children were injured as a result of their negligence."

When asked if the parents will face any charges, Battiste says it's too early in the investigation to comment on that.
