Mobile Police have confirmed that downtown Fairhope is locked down as Mobile Police's bomb squad and the FBI x-ray a suspicious package that was reported around 7am this morning.

The package is reportedly duct-taped on the outside, with wiring and a battery exposed.

The situation is centered on Church Street between Magnolia St. and Fairhope Avenue.

NBC 15 has a crew en route to the scene.

UPDATE:

The downtown area of Fairhope has been re-opened. The suspicious package was examined and is not considered to be a threat.

Earlier this morning, a suspicious package was found on Church Street in Fairhope, between Magnolia Street and Fairhope Avenue.

Due to the presence of exposed wiring and possible battery connections, the package was being treated as potentially hazardous.

Portions of Church Street, Magnolia Avenue, and Fairhope Avenue were temporarily blocked by the Fairhope Police Department. The Mobile Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit has examined the package and determined that it is safe.

Roads that were previously blocked are being opened. A small section of Church Street between Magnolia Street and Fairhope Avenue remains closed while officials conclude their investigation.

The city of Fairhope released the following statement:

On 03/13/2018, at approximately 7 a.m., a suspicious package was found on Church Street in Fairhope, between Magnolia Street and Fairhope Avenue.

Due to the presence of exposed wiring and possible battery connections, the package is being treated as potentially hazardous.

Portions of Church Street, Magnolia Avenue, and Fairhope Avenue have been blocked by the Fairhope Police Department. The Mobile Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit is currently on-scene assessing the package.

Residents are being asked to avoid the area being blocked by police until the scene has been declared safe.

No other areas are affected except the immediate area around Church Street.
