Cop caught swerving on I-10 joins Sheriff's Office
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) —
Last year, a video of a Mobile Police officer swerving on I-10 surfaced. The department identified Lt. Jeffrey Hilburn as the driver, and he resigned.
NBC 15's Andrea Ramey discovered he's back on patrol, but with a different agency. Lt. Hilburn is now Deputy Hilburn at the Mobile County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office hired him in February.
The department is giving us some insight about what happened in the video. Mobile Police never released why Hilburn was swerving, which resulted in him hitting a pickup truck. The department would only say his actions weren't criminal and drugs or alcohol were not in his system.
The Sheriff's Office says Hilburn had been working very long hours and a medical issue happened. Due to privacy reasons, what that medical issue was is not being released. MCSO says a background check was performed. He was vetted and found to be extremely qualified. He's currently working on patrol.
The Sheriff's Office says there have been no incidents with Hilburn since he's come on board. A spokesperson for the department called him a "great hire."
