MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) - The Mobile County Public School System has been working all week to get ready for the first day of classes on August 8th. But, it’s not just the teachers and principals preparing, it is every department in the school district.

The Transportation Department is currently looking to hire 30 additional drivers for the school district to be able to deal with any unforeseen circumstances in the upcoming school year.

It’s a reserve to augment the shortfalls and those unforeseen things that happen. You have individuals who will retire or resign and so we want to make sure we have the number in place to augment those shortfalls,” said Director of Transportation Pat Mitchell.

On an average school day, the school district run anywhere between 630-640 buses, transporting more than 26,000 students. Even though the district is looking to add more drivers to their roster, Mitchell says this will not affect transportation throughout the school year because they have number of drivers to maintain the students they currently serve.
